Reaching new heights at Eden Wood

July 30 was a special day for several reasons at Eden Wood Center in Eden Prairie.

A representative of Lions Club International, past district governor Roger Badenhop, presented a check for $50,000 toward the renovation of the dormitory at the camp, one of Eden Prairie’s two entries on the National Register of Historic Places. Local Lions and Lioness clubs raised more than $75,000 toward the project.

The dormitory has been revamped to make it better able to accommodate the campers with disabilities who stay there. Some finishing work – and fundraising – are still left to be done, Stracke said.

Later that day, Toronto Raptors forward Kris Humphries, formerly of Eden Prairie, visited with campers with disabilities attending a “Sports Seekers” camp session. The pro basketball player is a former Hopkins High School basketball star.

He said that in the off season his foundation (the Kris Humphries Foundation, based in Chanhassen) works to better the lives of youth in Minnesota through education, health and participation in sports.

Humphries had volunteered at the respite care program at Eden Wood Center when he was in high school. As a video of Humphries playing basketball started, he said, “Hopefully, next time you play basketball, you try some of this stuff.”

Humphries gave pictures to each camper and awarded a basketball to one camper.

“That was a special day,” a camp participant said as he left.

Eden Wood Center, 6350 Indian Chief Road, is operated by Friendship Ventures.
