About 800 first grade students received a book as part of “My Book Day [0].” The event was held at the City Center and included different stations where local officials (such as the Police Chief and Fire Marshal) read to students. Kids were signed up for library cards at the event. They also had a choice to take home one of six different books. The Eden Prairie Noon Rotary Club funded the entire event. The books distributed this year included:
“Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 2001.
"Traction Man is Here!" by Mini Grey, Knopf, 2005.
"A Chair for My Mother" by Vera B. Williams, Greenwillow Books, 1982.
"Reading Makes You Feel Good" by Todd Parr Megan Tingley Books/Little, Brown, 2005.
"Actual Size" by Steven Jenkins, Houghton Mifflin, 2004.
"The Lion's Share" by Said Salah Ahmed, Minnesota Humanities Commission, 2006
This event got me thinking about the favorite books I read when I was a kid. I would have to say that “The Hobbit" was my favorite along with anything by Roald Dahl. I asked some of the volunteers at the event about their favorite children’s books:
Rotary Club member Larry Kurzeka ----“The Cat in the Hat”
Judi Laurence ---Richard Scarry books
Nancy Tyra-Lukens----Nancy Drew books
Anybody else want to share what his or her favorite children’s book is?
