July 30 was a special day for several reasons at Eden Wood Center in Eden Prairie.


PROP works to restock bare cupboards

High levels of use and low levels of donations are leaving the cupboards bare at PROP (People Reaching out to Other People), said executive director Anne Harnack.


Crime briefs

At 5:02 a.m. July 13, three male suspects broke into a Subway on 7725 Flying Cloud Drive. The suspects broke the front store window leave $1000 damage and left an additional $600 in damage to the cash register. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the register and safe. Someone staying in a nearby hotel saw the three suspects running from the scene.


Funeral notice for Orval A. Westermann

Orval Westermann, 88 of Eden Prairie, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 5701 Eden Prairie Road, Minnetonka.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Huber Funeral Chapel, 16394 Glory Lane, Eden Prairie.

Funeral notice for Angela Esther Willey

Angela (Allen) Willey, 89, formerly of Mound, Canby, Roseau, and Warren, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Auburn Manor Care Center, Chaska.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 7, at 5 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 16515 Luther Way, Eden Prairie.

Funeral arrangements were with the Bertas Funeral Home of Chaska, 952-448-2137.

In China, EP teens see ‘different world’

As the world casts its eyes toward Beijing for the summer Olympics, a group of Eden Prairie students can offer their own unique perspective on China. Nineteen Eden Prairie High School students along with four district staff members recently returned from two weeks in the country, seeing the sights of Shanghai, Beijing and Loudi, a city Eden Prairie has forged a partnership with over the past couple years.


EP Marine on road to recovery

Marine Cpl. Joe Piram turned age 23 on July 20 and his birthday included a major gift:

“He got to stand up for the first time in a month,” said Joe's father, Charlie Piram.

Katrina Radke met Olympian John Naber at a young age. Later, she’d meet Tracy Caulkins, in Radke’s eyes, the best female swimmer ever.

Freshmen cheerleading tryouts

Eden Prairie Antique Fair is set Aug. 9

Antiquing enthusiasts get ready for the second Eden Prairie Antique Fair set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.
The Dunn Bros. in the Smith-Douglas-More House, 8107 Eden Prairie Road, plays host to the event, which features live music throughout the day.

Tomorrow is deadline to register for Watershed District class

A Quality Bicycle Products facility tour will be part of the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District’s 2008 Summer Education Series.
Quality Bicycle Products has LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Council and also has been awarded the Carbon Buster Award from the State of Minnesota. When company officials were asked why they decided to go green, the response was that the company has always had a strong environmental culture and because it’s just the right thing to do, according to a news release.

Funeral notice for Glen Z. Wilson

Glen Wilson, 83, of Eden Prairie, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008.

Service is Thursday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. at St. George Episcopal Church, 5224 Minnetonka Boulevard, St. Louis Park, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Legion teams earns state tournament berth

As 10th District Champions, the Eden Prairie American Legion baseball team earned a state tournament berth. Eden Prairie, the state's top ranked team, enters the tournament as defending state champions.

Jon Dudycha, a 1999 Eden Prairie High School graduate, has been named first assistant to the Colorado Christian University baseball team.


NFHS adopts new lacrosse rules

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Beginning next season, boys lacrosse players must wear gloves that cover the palms. Gloves that have the palms cut out or were manufactured without palms will not be legal.


It's National Farmers' Market Week

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association are celebrating “National Farmers’ Market Week” Aug. 3-9, according to a news release.

The number of farmers’ markets in the U.S. has grown dramatically in recent years - prompting local, regional and national advocates of local farming to designate a week each year to recognize their benefits.

Direct marketing of farm products through farmers’ markets continues to be an important sales outlet for agricultural producers nationwide.


Make your National Night Out party green

Eden Prairie Night Out Parties are planned tomorrow. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency offers the following tips for making your party "Green:"

1. Provide recycling bins for the empty cans and bottles. If possible, buy beverages in bulk-size containers and use reusable cups.

2. When possible, e-mail information about your block party to prospective attendees to cut down on paper use. If that's not an option, print literature out double-sided, on a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer content recycled paper, available from most copy stores.
