Hopkins High School students win top honors in College in the Schools competition
A team from Hopkins High School’s College in the Schools (CIS) Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology course has been awarded the first-place Golden Femur Trophy for their video “Blood Cells Rock.” The video was selected from over 30 videos submitted by students enrolled in the course at 10 high schools in the metro area and outstate.

Aerobic exercise equipment donations needed for pilot project
Hopkins West Junior High School is seeking new or used exercise equipment to outfit a special Goals Lab supervised study hall in the school. Students selected to participate in this pilot project will exercise vigorously for 20–30 minutes just prior to working on their most rigorous academic subjects. Research supports the notion that cognitive abilities and attention are boosted for 60–90 minutes after vigorous exercise. Equipment donations that are needed include rebounders (mini-trampolines), treadmills, stair steppers, stationary bicycles, etc., in good or reparable condition. Cash donations are also welcome. Anyone who would like to donate equipment and/or arrange for a pick-up should contact Danielle Bogucki at danielle.bogucki@hopkinsschools.org or 952-988-4443.

Spirit Shop schedules Saturday Holiday Sale for Nov. 28
The Hopkins High School Spirit Shop will be open for its first Saturday Holiday Sale on November 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to a variety of Hopkins spirit merchandise available for purchase, there will be special items on sale for that day only, including a Classic Grey Hoodie for only $30 (retails for $39) in sizes Small thru 2X, while supplies last. The spirit shop is located on the first floor of Hopkins High School, next to the Lindbergh Center. Phone number: 952-988-4551.

Concert Choir Festival to be held Nov. 30 at Hopkins High School
The Hopkins High School Concert Choir, together with the Hopkins West Junior High Concert Choir and the Hopkins North Junior High Concert Choir, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, in the Hopkins High School Auditorium. Hopkins High School’s male and female á cappella ensembles, GEOFF! and Midori, also will perform. Tickets will be available at the door for $7 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. Hopkins High School is located at 2400 Lindbergh Drive in Minnetonka.

Hopkins High School Band Boosters schedule book fair fundraiser
A fundraiser by the Hopkins High School Band Booster Association to support the various band programs at Hopkins High School will be held at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers store at Ridgehaven Mall in Minnetonka from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Students from the HHS bands will be performing during the afternoon and evening, and a portion of the store proceeds from purchases of books, music, movies, or refreshments will go toward supporting those programs. Free gift wrapping will be offered between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Vouchers to use when checking out with purchases are available on the Band Boosters’ website, www.hopkinsbands.com. The Ridgehaven Barnes & Noble is located at 13131 Ridgedale Dr., Minnetonka.

Hopkins High School jazz concert to be held on Dec. 3
“An Evening of Jazz” featuring the Hopkins High School Jazz One and Jazz Too bands will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Little Theater at Hopkins High School. General admission tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $7 for adults and $4 for students or senior citizens. The HHS jazz bands are directed by William Bell. Hopkins High School is located at 2400 Lindbergh Dr., Minnetonka.

Annual Hopkins High School Winter Gala Concerts set for Dec. 7 and 8
The annual Winter Gala Concerts, featuring Hopkins High School’s choirs, bands, orchestras, and ensembles, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, and Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the Hopkins High School auditorium. The concerts will include different performances each of the two evenings. Tickets are now on sale, at $7 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. General admission tickets are available at www.seatyourself.biz/hopkins and will also be available at the door each evening.

‘Parenting Teens: Know Your Parent Power of Influence,’ Tuesday, Dec. 1
The final of five parent conversation circles with Dr. Mary Wilkens around topics related to raising teens will take place from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Room 204 at the Eisenhower Community Center. These workshops are designed to address different parenting challenges, provide a place to ask questions, and allow parents to learn tips and strategies to be the parents they want to be. The goal is to help parents establish continuous, healthy conversations with their children based upon their values and house rules. There is no fee and no registration is required.

Hopkins junior highs schedule fundraiser at Barnes & Noble, Saturday, Dec. 5
Hopkins North and Hopkins West Junior High Schools will be holding a fundraiser at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers store at Ridgehaven Mall from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5. On that day a portion of the store’s proceeds will be given to the schools to purchase books needed for their classrooms and library media centers. Vouchers are available on West’s and North’s websites that must be turned in with book purchases, and the school’s name needs to be mentioned prior the purchases being rung up. Any school district residents planning to purchase books for holiday giving are encouraged to do their shopping on that day. Teachers with educator discount cards can get a 25% discount on all purchases that day as well. Hopkins students will be present between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Ridgehaven Barnes & Noble is located at 13131 Ridgedale Drive in Minnetonka.

U.S. Women’s Olympic hockey team to play Hopkins High School boys’ team, Dec. 5
The 2009-10 U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team will play the Hopkins High School boys’ hockey team at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, presenting a rare opportunity to see the U.S. Women’s team play locally before the 2010 Olympics. The game will be held in the Hopkins Pavilion. A limited supply of tickets is available at four locations in the Hopkins area (Hopkins High School Spirit Shop and Athletic Office, Lone Spur Grill, Tuttle’s Bowling Bar & Grill, and Decoy’s Bar & Grill) and at General Sports in Edina. Adult tickets are $10 advance/ $12 at the door; student tickets are $5 advance/$7 at the door.

‘Are You Concerned about your Child and Chemical Use?’ Thursday,
Dec. 10
Parents of teenagers ages 12 to 18 are invited to learn about current chemical-use trends, signs, and risks, as well as strategies to empower them to prevent and intervene if a teen starts experimenting or if they have a concern with addiction. This event, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, in Room W230 at Hopkins High School, is sponsored by HCC: One Voice for reducing youth chemical use and will take place during the staff dinner hour the evening of HHS parent-teacher conferences. The speaker will be Teens Alone Director Rob Ward, Ph.D. All parents of teens are encouraged to attend. The session is free, and no registration is required.
