Open garage doors easy targets for burglars

Eden Prairie Police are warning residents to make sure they keep their garage doors closed, locked, and to watch out for their neighbors’ doors as well.

“Just look out for eachother,” said Sgt. Bob Olson.

Open garage doors make easy targets for burglars. In June, the number of residential burglaries was almost twice that of the month of May, according to a city news release.

The city’s law enforcement analyst, Ryan Kapaun, looked at February 2007 burglaries and found that out of 127 total, 62 percent were nonforced entry, and 51 percent were the result of an open garage door or unlocked door. Also worth noting, 56 percent of those burglaries occurred while the residence was occupied.

Such was the case during two recent burglaries that happened on nearby streets. Between 10 p.m. June 23 and 6:30 a.m. June 24, someone entered a residence on the 6000 block of Morningside Circle. The suspect entered the occupied residence through an unlocked rear patio door. A number of items were taken from the kitchen, totaling $2,520 and including a briefcase, iPod, digital camera, two purses with credit cards, a money clip with cards and identification. The residence was occupied at the time.

On that same night and time, in the same neighborhood within the 6000 block of Fallbrook Road, someone entered a residence through an open garage door and took a briefcase, purse, wallet with cash, satchel and gift card from the kitchen of that residence, while its occupants slept. The total missing from that incident was $680.

Another common crime, which typically increases in the summer is theft from vehicles, often from those vehicles parked in the driveway of a residence. Most recently, a theft of this type occurred on the 15000 block of Michelle Lane between June 16 and 17. There, someone took a $1,200 bike from a vehicle parked in a driveway.

Bottom line: Police are encouraging Eden Prairie residents to lock their doors, make sure your neighbors have closed their doors, and not to leave valuables in vehicles.
