Sidney Markie of Shakopee died early Tuesday morning in a Miami hospital nearly five months after receiving a multi-organ transplant that was considered the only option for her to live beyond age 3.
Sidney celebrated her first birthday on July 17. She was born with a rare genetic disorder called Microvillus Inclusion Disease, which prevented her intestines from absorbing any nutrients. The March 4 transplant included a stomach, pancreas, large and small intestine, liver, kidneys and a bladder. She was awaiting another kidney transplant when she developed RSV pneumonia and her immune system was too weak to continue fighting, family members said.
