DNR warns of fire danger

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reporting that abnormally dry conditions are causing concern in much of Minnesota.

"Wildfire suppression officials are concerned about potential fire danger since much of Minnesota has been unusually dry since mid-June," according to a DNR news release.

The release said:


EP tennis team edges Wayzata

The Eden Prairie High School girls tennis team's waltz through the Classic Lake Confernece continued Thursday with a 4-3 victory over Wayzata.

Monday, Eden Prairie opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Hopkins.

Tuesday, the Eagles lost 6-1 to Edina.

 


Eden Prairie cross-country teams tops at Matterhorn

Thursday, the No. 2 ranked Eden Prairie boys and girls cross-country teams opened thier respective seasons with victories at the Matterhorn Invitational.

The Eden Prairie boys team finished first with 47 points. Eastview placed second with 122 points.

the Eden Praiire girls team finished first with 55 points, 13 points in front of second place Winona.

 


New-look EP football team beats Jefferson 38-14

Thursday was a coming out party of sorts for the Eden Prairie High School football team. With new faces under at least half the Eagles’ 100-plus helmets, nobody, including Head Coach Mike Grant, knew what to expect. Eden Prairie looked a little inexperienced at times, giving up too many big plays, but still rolled to a 38-14 victory over a Moses Alipate-led Bloomington Jefferson squad.

Fair Favorites Ballot election tomorrow

The League of Women Voters Minnesota has planned a “Fair Favorites Ballot” – an election to promote its State of Democracy Project on Friday, Aug. 29. Ballot counters will provide results at 5 p.m. The Fair polling station will be at LWV Minnesota's table in Minnesota Public Radio’s booth at Carousel Park by the Grandstand.


Soccer team hopes to build on Minnesota Cup success

What’s more amazing? The fact that the Eden Prairie High School boys soccer team won the Minnesota Cup Soccer Tournament, yet scored only one goal; or, that Eden Prairie pitched shutouts against Stillwater and St. Paul Central while employing a whole new defense (defenders and keeper).


For Eden Prairie girls soccer, defense never rests

Wayne Harrison, head coach of the Eden Prairie High School girls soccer team, doesn’t like conceding goals, any goals, ever.

This, in turn, is reflected in his coaching philosophy: “We’ll have a defensive start position rather than an offensive start position,” he said.

Eden Prairie sending officers to cover convention

Twelve Eden Prairie Police Officers will be assigned to assist with Republican National Convention duties in St. Paul. According to Police Chief Rob Reynolds, the officers will be providing assistance starting Saturday through the following Sunday. Reynolds gave the update during last Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Delegates share convention plans

Eden Prairie News caught up with two residents heading to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. This weekend, Tori Hill, an alternate delegate to the Democratic National Convention will be returning to the Twin Cities as that event wraps up. At the same time, Angela Erhard will be heading to St. Paul, as a delegate for the Republican National Convention.


A little help from some ‘Friends’

The Friends of the Eden Prairie Art Center are taking baby steps, or you might say kid steps toward the ultimate goal of raising funds and awareness about the new Art Center: The group is organizing a number of community events this fall, starting with an art-making event for kids on Sept. 21 at the Community Center and leading up to a silent auction in December that could include locally made art.

Lightning causes two house fires in EP

Two Eden Prairie homes were damaged by fire after lightning hit both sites Wednesday morning.

“Both of them lost a chunk of their roof,” noted Eden Prairie Fire Marshal Allen Nelson.


Football team to hold fundraiser


Waconia beats Eden Prairie volleyball team in four games

Chad Becker, head coach of the Eden Prairie High School volleyball team, feels that his team is better than a handful of teams ranked in the top 10.

"What we have to do is to go out and prove it," he said.

Tuesday, Eden Prairie had its chance. Unfortunately, the Eagles fell to Waconia in four games, 25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 26-24.

Thursday, Eden Prairie hosts Cretin-Derham Hall (7 p.m.).

 


EP tennis team falls to Edina

Monday, the Eden Prairie High School tennis team opened its season in impressive fashion, beating Hopkins by a score of 6-1.

Tuesday, defending state champion Edina Hornets returned the favor, sticking the Eagles with a 6-1 loss.

Eden Prairie returns to action Thursday with a home match against Wayzata (3:30 p.m.).

 


Eden Prairie and Benilde soccer teams battle to 1-1 tie

The schedule didn't get any easier.

Last week, the Eden Prairie High School boys soccer team defeated Stillwater and St. Paul Central en route to a Minnesota Cup title.

Tuesday, the Eagles, ranked No. 1 in class 2A,  took on Benilde-St. Margaret's, ranked No. 1 in Class A. Does something have to give? Not so, as the two tams battled to a 1-1 overtime tie.

Tuesday, Eden Prairie opens Lake Conference play at Chaska (7 p.m.).

A new partner

Santiago Martinez, the director of the Hogar de Ninos Tierra Santa, a school/orphanage in Honduras, is visiting Eden Prairie teachers this week.  Eden Prairie School District staff members are looking to raise funds for the school, and encourage people to visit the facility.



Eden Prairie earns second League Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup is a statewide, year-long competition among League member schools. Schools earn points for their success in post-season tournaments, and two schools — one in  Class A and one in Class AA — with the most points are awarded the traveling Challenge Cup. The award is sponsored by Wells Fargo, the League’s premier corporate sponsor.
