Don't forget to thank yourself.

For those of you who don't know, Don used to be the city's financial guru. We are fortunate that Don is now providing his expertise as a volunteer member of the BAC.

Languages can be learned at any age. I agree that kids should be taught a second language like many many European Schools teach English as a second language.
Heck, I learned Italian in my forties!

I have always wished that I learned another language when I was younger -- studies show that it's easier for kids to learn multiple languages than it is for adults.

I took Spanish in middle school but I pretty much have only retained counting to 10 and asking where the bathroom is (plus my daughter taught me "10 Little Indians" in Spanish when she came home from her Montessori preschool one day).

I took German in college and, other than asking where my mother is, the one phrase that has stuck in my (head because I like how it sounds) is "Haben sie einen plattenspieler?" -- which means "Do you have a record player?" Very helpful in today's iPod world.

The School Board is going to make a decision on this some time in the coming weeks. The next meeting will be this Monday, June 4.

First I should say that I no longer have children in the school system and so will not be personally impacted. I do support the need to address the disproportionate minority/low SES population currently at Forest Hills Elementary through boundary adjustments. We went through multiple boundary changes in our neighborhood in the late 80's & early 90s. Children adjust very quickly.
But let's not use the issue above as an excuse to go back on the plan presented to the community when the Spanish Immersion Program was introduced. If the best practice in immersion school instruction is to start teaching more in English by the intermediate level, doesn't it also make total sense to have that portion of the program more integrated with other like age peers?
School Board - continue to question, be voices of reason and listen to the entire community. As more districts implement immersion programs around us, this may no longer be the big draw for open enrollment that it was initially billed.

Actually that's not my comment above, it's someone else's. I wasn't going to leave one but then I couldn't delete the box.

I do agree with teal. Oak Point is a wonderful school beloved by students, parents and staff alike and I think dismantling it would be a travesty. It is a perfect developmental setting for those age kids and extremely well staffed and run. I also don't see how the special programs (band, orchestra, accelerated math) can be run well if some or all of the students leave Oak Point. I like the choice option better than green but I know I would be bursting a blood vessel if my kids did not get Oak Point. I can see all out war developing, or class distinctions between the schools, or people starting to want elementary school "choice" as well. I really don't think we want to go there.

It is hard luck on the Spanish Immersion to be split between buildings but I don't see displacing 1500 families for that. Maybe if it grows enough it could take over one of the elementary schools in a couple of years. But don't mess with Oak Point.
