Definitely Prince, The Time, that sort of thing. But also The Plastic Constellations, who I think are from Hopkins. How about Perpich Center for Arts Education graduate Har Mar Superstar? He was in Starsky & Hutch.

"You Only Live Once" by The Strokes. The lyrics are a bit abstract, but all kind of relate to the title in some way -- basically saying there are all kinds of things in this world that can leave you disillusioned, but you can choose to walk right past them and maintain your own good vibe, sort of espousing a live-and-let-live attitude. And the music is amazing -- the saucy beat and good-time attack of the band really lift you up. I don't know if there's such a thing as a skip-strut, but that's what the song makes me want to do. I think you're right about band names going through trend cycles. Remember Whitesnake, White Lion or even White Zombie from the '80s and early '90s? And with the resurgence of garage rock in the early '00s, there were a slew of "The" bands: The Strokes, The Hives, The Vines, The White Stripes, The Black Keys ...

I kind of like MGMT (management?)
I just bought that CD, so, my opinion might be colored by the fact that I totally dig their sound.

Stinks: Blink 182, Asia, the very worst name I've ever heard is a band called "Aids Wolf"
It seems like there are alot of "wolf" band names out there right now: Sea Wolf, Wolf Parade, Wolfmother

Also, I've heard atleast two vampire bands lately-- Vampire Weekend and Vampire Hands

I wonder if, similar to children's names, band name trends go in waves?

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve is one song that consistantly delivers the chills. It starts off so repetitive, but then "BAM!" the full symphony kicks in and it's beautiful and perfect in dynamics and timing. Whenever I hear that song - whatever mood I'm in, wherever I'm at - I will get goosebumps - it's inevitable.
