A click away: The following list includes some of the impacts related to closing two courthouses: It is from a letter sent by Thompson to the chair of the Senate Judiciary Funding Division:
“--Court appearances at the Government Center and Brookdale Courthouse may increase by as much as 63,000 per year.
--Workload will not diminish and case processing will slow down. The 4th District will not be able to maintain case processing timing standards prescribed by the American Bar Association, the State judicial branch, or the Fourth Judicial District Court.
--The Public will wait longer for court appearances
--Backlogs in case processing and court appearances will limit our ability to process fine and fee payments in a timely manner. Municipalities and the State general fund may experience a drop in annual revenue from court fines and fees. Disbursements to municipalities served by Ridgedale and Southdale totaled over $6 million in 2007.
---Transportation and parking will be an issue for some individuals, further diminishing access to justice and court services.
--Court partners including probation, domestic abuse advocates, city prosecutors, public defenders and private defense bar will be required to conduct business either downtown or at the Brookdale Courthouse
--Municipal police departments will be required to come downtown or go the Brookdale Courthouse to obtain signed warrants.”
