The following is on page 26 of this week's Eden Prairie News, in our "Looking back" section:
"The Nov. 13, 1975, issue of the Eden Prairie News reported that “Ring Road” would now be named “Schooner Boulevard.”
“Nobody on the City Council was pleased with the name ‘Ring Road,’ the partially completed major street which is planned to encircle an industrial-commercial complex at the highways 169-494 intersection.
“So last week, the council changed the name to ‘Schooner Boulevard’ on a 3-2 vote. The decision came after lighthearted discussion, with other names also considered: Prairie Center Road, Prairie Circle, Center Circle, Center Road.
“The final choice was suggested by Joan Meyers, who alluded to EP’s prairie pioneer history as a rationale for Schooner Boulevard. Wolf Penzel and Sidney Pauley joined the majority, with Penzel saying ‘I defy you to find a similar name in another telephone directory.’
“Bill Bye countered by saying, ‘There could be a reason for that.’ He and Mayor David Osterholt, who has suggested Prairie Center Road, dissented. They felt the new name was a little corny. New signs will be installed.”
"Today the road is known as Prairie Center Drive and Valley View Road."
I like the humorous back-and-forth between the City Council members. So, does anyone know what happened next? I'll explore some back issues, but why isn't there a Schooner Boulevard today?

Yeah, that is kind of corny....
Back to page topYeah, that is kind of corny. How about Purgatory Road?

Back to page topI think they stuck with Prairie Center drive after the Eden Prairie center was built in 1976. I still remember the grand opening.

Back to page topDid you meet Melissa Sue Anderson? She played Mary on Little House on the Prairie, I heard she was there. Carrie (the Greenbush Twins) was not there because Jack (the dog) couldn't come too.
I did meet Melissa Sue...
Back to page topI did meet Melissa Sue Anderson. I remember telling my mother that she was shorter than me and I was 10 at the time.
She also had a lot of facial hair but I digress.
I remember hot air balloon rides for willing participants.
As you know, Eden Prairie was not a top 10 in anything at that time.

Back to page topSchooner. Now, there's a funny word. Wasn't there a scene in the movie "Mr. Mom" where the working mother develops a successful advertising pitch for Schooner Tuna? Maybe I have that wrong, but that's what pops into my mind when I hear the word Schooner.
