The closing of EP’s Bilimbi Bay and Zeno’s – as well as many other restaurants in the metro area – is cited on this blog, http://cleanairquality.blogspot.com/2007/01/100-bars-and-restaurants-put-out-of.html, as evidence that the smoking bans enacted in parts of the Twin Cities metro area are bad for business. Your thoughts?

Back to page topI would add Hops in Eden Prairie to that list. Chanhassen restaurants/bars are packed. Houlihan's, Buffalo Wild Wings and the Legion are doing great business. I rarely see anyone sitting in the bar at the Great Mandarin at the EP center. Smokers used to pack that bar. Oh well.

Back to page topAs a non-smoker and a Chanhassen resident, I am more inclined to go to Eden Prairie and other cities (and counties) where there is a smoking ban to eat or have a drink. I appreciate being able to enjoy my meal without getting watery eyes or clothes that smell of smoke. I'd love to see the entire state go smoke-free in bars and restaurants. And I think a state-wide ban would stop non-smoking ban areas from being able to take business away from areas that have enacted smoking bans.

Back to page topI'm not sure if restaurants like Bilimbi or Zeno went out of business because of the ban. When I talked to restaurant managers in the city when it first started, most found that their sales weren't really affected. This is mostly because the bars in EP operate as restaurants as well. The "bar bars" of Minneapolis, I believe felt more of an impact.
