So what do you think of our Web site's (www.edenprairienews.com) updates unveiled last weekend? I see someone has already pointed out some weaknesses with our featured photo list, which pulls random pieces of photos that have been submitted to our "smug mug" site.

Back to page topI am very impressed with the functionality and design of the site. I've been reading the print edition for quite a while and did not even know there was a website until recently, so I was very pleasantly surprised when I did find it. In particular, I really like the site's ability to accept comments in response to ANY item -- story, blog post, forum post, whatever. That's a really nice, community-centric functionality.
Here are a few thoughts about items that maybe could stand some tinkering with:

Back to page topThanks for the feedback. All valid points. Putting the kabash on anonymous user accounts is an intriguing idea. It's interesting to watch all this get played out on news sites. I'm not sure most news organizations have a clear mandate on how to handle the free-for-all of comments.

Back to page topThis isn't a dating site? I thought that's why the fictionwriter does multiple posts under multiple names, multiple times a day; it's about meeting a soul mate.
I would like to complement WW on a very his very precise description of problems with the new website. I agree with WW that signing in and out is problematic because the ad-imation blocks the control panel drop-down box.
The link to forum-comments problem that WW points out (where you're brought to the top, not the bottom) existed under the old design. In the example he mentions, this is a blessing because readers have some warning before getting drawn to another one of those boring cut-n-paste jobs. Let's call it a vast right wing conspiracy and leave it at that.
Anonymous Names: First and foremost, eliminating pseudonyms would result in more honesty and less sourcing of partisan websites like Wikipeida. A downside is the fear of retaliation. If you posted something the Ashwin Madia campaign didn't like, they might send over one of their 'volunteers' to steal your scooter.
Over the course of a week, I read several news blogs from around the country. I don't know of any that prohibit the use of pseudonyms. Here's something to think about; how does a reader or the newspaper know that William Wood is actually William Wood?
WW's says his suggestion "encourages more reflection and civility." In the blogosphere, that horse has long left the barn. As I think back to the days of Dan Rather, he was neither reflective or civil.
I too have failed in attempts to add images to posts. I've seen these used in the other SW Suburban News sites, so it must be possible here.

There are a couple of workarounds I've found for the problem of navigating to comments posted to threads with multiple pages:
1. First, you can do an end run around the problem. Not sure if this is advertised anywhere, but the site supports an RSS feed for the comments. It is here:
http://www.edenprairienews.com/crss
If you use a browser such as IE7, you can subscribe to the feed and get new comments directly. You can then sort the comments by date, title or author, up or down. You can also set the properties of the feed to store as many comments as you like, so you can keep a much larger history of comments than is shown on the site. If you have Vista, you can even then place the RSS feed into the RSS SideBar gadget.
2. Second, if you still want to locate the comment in the context of the thread it was posted in and don't want to have to hunt for it, you can manually update the URL to find the comment.
Example (this time from the "Obama Picks Plagiarist" thread):
Who Wrote Dreams From My Father
The link the site provides is the following:
http://www.edenprairienews.com/community/bigfoot/obama-picks-plagiarist#...
If you follow the given link, it will take you to the top of the thread since the post occurs on a subsequent page. To jump directly to the comment, manually update the link as follows:
Change this: ...obama-picks-plagiarist#comment-3123
To this: ...obama-picks-plagiarist?page=1#comment-3123
This will make the link go directly to the comment as follows:
http://www.edenprairienews.com/community/bigfoot/obama-picks-plagiarist?...
Threads begin on page "0", so the "second" page of the thread will be page "1".
For threads that have several pages, you will still have to guess which page the comment will occur on, but it's usually the last one.
