Restaurant Pick: Canyon Grille

» Read similar stories filed under:

Remember that big giant building by SouthWest Station that used to be Bilimbi Bay? Well the good news is, that space is no longer empty. Canyon Grille has set up shop and with that comes more good news.

The more good news is the new restaurant offers a version of mac and cheese that is just the comfort food needed for days where old man winter rears his ugly head. It’s a spruced up penne pasta version of Mac and Cheese too, so, reporter Leah Shaffer points out, "I didn’t feel too much like a 7-year-old when I ordered it."

So, they’ve got steaks and seafood and a huge wine list to match the huge dining space. Check it out, find a table next to the fireplace and get comfy.

Hmmm. I wonder how people define comfort food these days.

My parents probably would have defined it as meatloaf, homemade noodle soup, or if eating out the "hot beef commercial."

But I realize now that I haven't had meatloaf since I was a kid.

Therefore, what are the comfort foods of today? A good hamburger or pizza?

You are terribly lucky in E.P. You have two of my favorite food places in the world. Pei Wei is great quick Asian cuisine (I recommend the Honey Seared Chicken) and the soon-to-open Erbert & Gerberts (try the Girf). Once you go E&G, you don't go back to Subway. Can't wait for it to open. I'm crossing my fingers that Chanhassen is in its delivery zone :)

Erbert & Gerberts is set to open at 12575 Castlemoor Drive soon. I'm awaiting a call today to get a firm date and will let you know when I know.

A news release from the company says franchise owner Josh Boxx, 28, has another location in Lakeville.

"Boxx discovered early in his career that a normal 9-to-5 job wasn't for him. He describes his pre-entrepreneur life as resembling the movie, 'Office Space,'" the release said.

Erbert & Gerbert's concept grew out of childhood stories told to one of the founders of the company by his father about Erbert & Gerbert Herbert. Each sandwich is named after a character "Erbert & Gerbert encountered during their travels through space and time."

For info about the company, visit www.erbertandgerberts.com.

There are a lot of great restaurants in Eden Prairie -- some of which I haven't yet tried -- but one of my current favorites is Punch. My kids are adults now, and don't often join my wife and I when we go out to eat, and so I really like the idea of pizza for grown-ups. It's a refreshing change from all those years when we ordered good-but-not-great pizza primarily based on convenience and home-delivery speed.

This town needs a Cheesecake Factory restaurant. Ever been to the one in Edina? It's a 2 hour wait on Saturday nights.

Agreed on the Cheesecake Factory point. In the meantime, if you get a hankering for that restaurant's cheesecakes, you can find them in the Barnes & Noble Cafe at Eden Prairie Center.

What happened at Chevy's Tex Mex in Eden Prairie? Planned to enjoy dinner with friends there last night ... outside lights on but restaurant was closed, with a simple sign on the door.

This is still a popular item on the Web site, but we haven't had any new suggestions for a while. How about Biaggi's and Wildfire at Eden Prairie Center? I've always had great food at both.

Has anyone been to the Crumb Gourmet Deli yet?

Like Bilimbi Bay and the restaurant before it (I'm thinking there was something else?), Canyon Grille is no more...

We went there for dinner in January and, I've recently learned, it apparently closed about a week later.

The Web site claims a change in ownership and closure for an undetermined amount of time (http://www.canyongrille.com/ep/). I'm betting they don't come back as Canyon Grille...
