While the disaster in Haiti has been called the worst natural disaster in recent history by the United Nations, the subsequent response by the American people and others around the world can arguably be called the greatest aid effort in recent history. Numerous aid organizations have been inundated with financial support, and are still seeking more. This support has been made easier with our 21st century world: text-message donations and news updates from around the globe about the status of an ailing country have brought ease and effectiveness to helping those in need like never before.
Well folks, it’s September. Summer is officially over, along with my summer job. After working my rear off for the past month and a half (the hiring process was a little lengthy), I handed in my two weeks’ notice with the confidence that I had made the correct choice to terminate my employment. After all, it is my senior year; why should I have to work?
But was quitting really that wise of a decision?
I’ve always been hesitant to write about technology, and there are two reasons why. The first is the simple fact that I tend to nerd-out when given the chance, and writing about the Internet is only a couple of steps removed from complaining about the upcoming “Star Trek” movie. My second reason, though, is that I fear that adults today are far too willing to assume that young people are defined by the propagation of technology that has taken place in their lifetimes.

In ancient Greece , men used to gather in a great stadium to pay homage to the human spirit and, of course, the human physique. Throngs of strong young Grecians valiantly sought the recognition of the others and a cherished olive branch. Now, as the nations of the world prepare for the Beijing Olympics this summer, China is also jockeying for a place on the top of the world’s podium, but the country stands to gain or lose much more than a piece of greenery.

I promised myself I was not going to do this. But in today’s world of exuberant political campaigns and the big showdown in Iowa just about a week away, it is more evident than ever that many promises just do not mean anything anymore. That being said, it is now completely acceptable that I disregard my own promise and share some political commentary with you now.
